Andrew Sagartz, JD, MBA, is the founding member of CALMEC. Previously with the 400-attorney law firm of Jenner & Block before 2002, on behalf of some of the nation's largest companies and financial institutions, Andrew worked on secured lending matters, business acquisitions (both stock and asset purchases), and securities law. He also assisted with securities litigation and handled not-for-profit matters as well as immigration cases on a pro bono basis.

Prior to joining Jenner & Block, Andrew was with Masuda, Funai, Eifert & Mitchell in Chicago. There, he counseled international business clients - many from Japan (Andrew is proficient in Japanese) - about business law, immigration issues, and the like.

 
 
 
Andrew graduated with honors from The Ohio State University College of Law. As a law student, Andrew clerked at a boutique immigration law firm where he worked on deportation and asylum cases. He was also a judicial extern with Hon. Alan E. Norris, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. As a law student, Andrew mediated conflicts at the Municipal Court of Franklin County, and was on staff of the Ohio State Journal on Dispute Resolution. He was also a two-time recipient of a Foreign Language and Area Study (FLAS) fellowship.

Prior to law school and after living and working in Japan for a time, Andrew graduated with distinction from the MBA program of Thunderbird: The American Graduate School of International Management, the nation's highest ranked graduate school in international business. There, he received Thunderbird's prestigious Worldwide Scholarship. "My MBA helps me to represent businesspersons. A business lawyer should understand issues from a business perspective."

Andrew obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Asian Studies from Lesley College in Cambridge, MA while working full time at Harvard Community Health Plan.

   
Christine Contreras, JD, joined CALMEC as an associate attorney. Christine has experience in matters relating to real estate law, family law, criminal law and immigration law and has dealt with many facets of immigration law, including family and employment based immigration matters, naturalization, removal proceedings, appellate matters, and federal court litigation. Christine will assist clients in the area of complex family based immigration matters and complex naturalization.

Christine received a Bachelor of Arts degree, with an emphasis on political science, from DePaul University in 1997. She received a Juris Doctorate from DePaul University College of Law in 2000. She is an active member of the Chicago Bar Association, Hispanic Lawyers Association of Illinois and the American Immigration Lawyers Association. She is fluent in English and Spanish.

   
Jiyeon Choi, JD, joined CALMEC as an associate attorney in October 2007. She has a wide variety of experience in immigration law including family and employment based immigration as well as asylum cases. She has also represented victims of domestic violence in relation to their family and immigration law matters.

Jiyeon received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chinese Language and Literature from Korea University in Seoul, Korea in 2001. Later on she went on to complete a Juris Doctorate from DePaul University's College of Law. There she represented VAWA (Violence Against Women's Act) clients as a student representative of DePaul's Immigration and Asylum Clinic. Like many other members of the firm, Jiyeon is fluent in several languages. She speaks Korean, Mandarin Chinese and English.

   
Robert Cook JD joined CALMEC as an attorney in 2006. Bob handles immigration matters and is involved with Neighbors Abroad, a non-profit corporation that provides support to recent immigrants, including subsidized legal services. He is a graduate of the College of the Holy Cross (A.B., History), Boston University School of Law (J.D.) and Washington Theological Union (Certification in Franciscan Studies). He holds a Certificate of Professional Achievement in Mediation Training from DePaul University Center for Dispute Resolution. He is member of the bars of the US District Court, Massachusetts, and Maryland.

Bob's legal practice began in 1989 with the Boston civil litigation firm Morrison, Mahoney LLP, a large insurance defense firm. Over the last few years, his practice has become focused on the service of immigrants and refugees. Most recently, he was a staff attorney with Catholic Charities in its Buffalo, NY refugee resettlement unit.

Bob is also a Franciscan friar and practices law as a Religious Brother in a Roman Catholic religious order. When Bob first moved to the area, he asked local social service workers to refer him to a law firm that was known for its kindness to immigrants. Inevitably, they referred CALMEC.

   
Changhwan Lee is an of-counsel attorney who joined CALMEC in 2007. His practice includes all areas of immigration law with a focus on employment-based immigration. His areas of concentration include nonimmigrant and immigrant working visas and related employment-based immigration and alien employment certification matters for domestic and multi-national employers, health care facilities and providers and their foreign-born employees, as well as family-based immigration.

Since 2004, Changhwan has been an active Member of the American Immigration Lawyers' Association (AILA). Also, he is the author of many print and web-based articles concerning issues related to immigration law. Furthermore, as a board member and the Legal Clinic Director of the Korean American Bar Association of Chicago, Changhwan has served clients and handled matters at the Korean Community Services' legal clinic.

Changhwan obtained his LLM from Wake Forest Law School in North Carolina and his JD from Valparasio Law School in Indiana. Prior to his Wake Forest education, he graduated from Korea University and completed his coursework for Ph.D. program in Criminal Law, while teaching Criminal Law at several universities in Korea.

   
Donald C. Slowik is a founding member of CALMEC's of-counsel law firm. Don was admitted to the Ohio Bar in 1980. A graduate of Duke University, magna cum laude, and The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law, Mr. Slowik has over 20 years of experience in labor and employment law, over 17 years of immigration law experience, and over a decade of experience as a Harvard-trained mediator. Mr. Slowik often lectures on the subjects of employment law and immigration law.

He is the author of several articles which have appeared in Ohio Lawyer Magazine and elsewhere.

Mr. Slowik counsels his clients on non-competition, trade secret, patent, trademark, and copyright questions, as well as general business issues. His employment litigation experience includes cases involving claims of sexual harassment and sex discrimination, age discrimination, national origin discrimination, public-policy tort, whistle-blower protection, and breach of non-competition agreements, among many others. Mr. Slowik advises private and public-sector clients on all areas of employment and labor law, including all discrimination laws, non-competition agreements, written employment policies, and employee terminations. He serves as a chief negotiator in labor contract negotiations.

Mr. Slowik also counsels and represents employers and individuals on a wide range of employment-based and family-based immigration matters. His employment-based immigration experience includes obtaining required governmental approvals for foreign investors; for temporary foreign workers in virtually every available category; and for aliens who qualify as immigrant EB-1 extraordinary aliens, outstanding researchers or professors, or multinational transferees, EB-2 exceptional or advance degreed aliens whose work is in the national interest, and EB-3 professional and skilled worker aliens. Mr. Slowik is well-versed with the alien labor certification process in Ohio and numerous other states. He has successfully represented businesses during “I-9 audits” by the Immigration and Naturalization Service (now known as U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services).

As a mediator, Mr. Slowik has engaged in the private mediation of employment and business cases since 2002. He is a longstanding member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, the American Bar Association, and the Ohio State Bar Association (OSBA), and is a Past Chair of the OSBA's Committee on Dispute Resolution.

   
Alexandra Sossa, JD joined CALMEC as an of-counsel attorney in 2007. Alexandra has experience with matters relating to Employment, International Business, Real Estate, Family, Criminal and Immigration Law. She has helped clients with their legal needs in the United States, Spain and Colombia. Alexandra has a long history of public service. While in the US, Alexandra played an instrumental role in the success of the Farm-worker's Advocacy Project. Through this project, she advised low income clients of their legal rights in the US. While in Spain, Alexandra helped Mexican Citizens through the local Embassy navigate though the Spanish legal system.   

Alexandra writes for several newspapers in Chicago, Illinois about issues that affect immigrants in the United States. These papers include: “La Raza”, “Nueva Semana”, “El Otro” and “La Voz de Beloit”. Alexandra is a graduate from the University of Medellin where she received her JD. She is bilingual and speaks Spanish and English fluently.

   
Kenneth J. Robinson is a founding member of CALMEC's of-counsel law firm, where he concentrates in a wide variety of immigration areas including health care, employment, academic, J waivers, multinational executives and specialty workers, and family-based petitions and applications.

Ken graduated from The Ohio State University College of Law, where he received the FLAS (Foreign Language and Area Studies) Fellowship on his way to obtaining a Certificate in International Trade and Development, which included a summer program of study at the Ecole Superior de Commerce de Nantes Atlantique. Ken's cum laude undergraduate degree in Diplomacy and Foreign Affairs from Miami University (Oxford, Ohio) prepared him well for his current concentration and provided him the opportunity to study at the John E. Dolibois European Center in Luxembourg. Ken's articles have been published by local and state bar associations in the area of immigration law and he is a co-author of the book Genocide in Cambodia: The Trial of Pol Pot and Ieng Sary. Ken has also been recognized for his extensive knowledge in the field of immigration law, having served as Special Counsel to the State of Ohio on immigration matters.

As part of his commitment to pro bono activities, Ken serves a large not-for-profit organization (Community Refugee Immigration Services) involved in the welfare and representation of recent refugees/asylees and indigent immigrants in Central Ohio as President of its Board of Trustees. Ken enjoys speaking and teaching courses on all aspects of immigration law to fellow attorneys in CLE programs and to graduate students as a member of the faculty of Capital University Law School Immersion Paralegal Program.

   
Julie C. Nemecek is an Associate Attorney at CALMEC's of-counsel law firm where she practices primarily in the area of immigration law. She is experienced in family-based immigration and employment immigration, including specialty workers, multinational executives and treaty traders/investors, and removal proceedings.

Julie is fluent in Mandarin Chinese and is able to directly counsel Chinese-speaking clients. A graduate of The Ohio State University College of Law, Julie also holds a bachelors degree in International Business from The Ohio State University. In 1997, during her undergraduate study, she was awarded the Huntington Fellowship and Bartell's Scholarship, which enabled her to study at the National Taiwan Normal University in Taipei, Taiwan.

As a summer intern during college, Julie worked at a Big-4 accounting firm, with offices in approximately 150 countries. There, she focused on state and local taxation issues and worked with Japanese clients in the area of business incentives. Ms. Nemecek also has managerial experience, which she gained working for a global logistics company before attending law school.

   
Vonya Dupuy holds a bachelor degree in Psychology and Sociology from Trinity International University and joined CALMEC with five years of experience in family-based immigration. Vonya was born in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, and is married to Oscar Dupuy, a native of Panama. They have one son

Prior to joining CALMEC, Vonya worked as an immigration coordinator at a nonprofit organization, where she implemented a program to help immigrant domestic violence victims receive legal status, as well as coordinated citizenship workshops involving more than 100 applicants and numerous volunteers. Through her personal and work experience, Vonya is also bilingual in both Spanish and English.

Vonya is actively involved in her multicultural church that she helped found two years ago, coordinating the Women's Ministry and being a member of the Advisory Team.

   
Sidartha Cuevas, A veteran of the U.S. Navy is CALMEC's Chief Operations Officer. Born in Mexico City, Sid came to the United States at the age of 13. At the age of 18, Sid enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and actively served as a Hospital Corpsman (Medic) for a total of 8 years. He served along side Sailors and Marines in Great Lakes, Illinois and Norfolk, Virginia.

While serving in the military, Sid had the opportunity to attend several colleges and universities including College of Lake County, Old Dominion University, Louisiana State University and Southern Illinois University. He graduated from SIU with a double major in Workforce Education and Development and Health Care Management. He is currently pursuing a Masters in Business Administration degree at Lake Forest Graduate School of Management in Lake Forest, Illinois.

Sid's personal experience with immigration and the naturalization process allows him to appreciate the importance of CALMEC's mission.

   
Juan C. Gomez, MBA joined CALMEC as Business Consultant in 2007. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the University of Medellin, in Medellin Colombia. Later in his career, Juan obtained a Masters of Business Administration degree with a concentration in Finance from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. Juan has worked for several prestigious firms in Colombia. He has held several key positions as International Treasury Analyst, Finance/Administrative Director and Finance Advisor. Juan has contributed to the success to several industry icons in Colombia, these include Industrias Nayarit, Quintex, Kimberly Clark and Gelco. While at Kimberly Clark, he worked side-by-side with the Corporate Treasurer at the world corporate headquarters in Dallas, Texas.

Juan's vast experience in finance and business administration is a great resource and key factor to CALMEC's future growth and success in South America. Like many other's at CALMEC, Juan is Bilingual. He is fluent in Spanish and English.

   
Asaka Morimoto was born Hokkaido, Japan. She graduated from Tamagawa University in Tokyo with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Linguistics. After four years working as an administrator, Asaka came to the United States as a student seeking additional education opportunities. She graduated form Katharine Gibbs School in Boston, Massachusetts, with an Associate degree in Secretarial Arts.The school recognized Asaka's dedication as a student when it nominated her for the prestigious Barbara Hale Bancroft Scholarship.

Asaka's career has focused upon producing results for executives in multinational companies, such as Yaskawa Electric at Columbus Office in Ohio. "I enjoy workplaces where there is a great deal of diversity." Asaka has acquired a great deal of experience with executives since coming to the United States. She joined the Firm in October 2002.

   
Monika Kierewicz was born and raised in Poland. She is fluent in Polish. Her bilingualism allows her to work as a skilled interpreter. She attended Business School in Rzeszow, Poland. She moved to Chicago in 2000, where she attended William Rainey Harper College and obtained her associate degree in paralegal studies. Monika plans to attend National Louis University to obtain her bachelors degree in political science.

After finishing her paralegal associate degree, Monika joined Calmec Global Law Group. Monika assists the firm in its representation of immigration matters. She frequently uses her educational experience and language skills to assist the Polish community.  

In her spare time, Monika enjoys sports and spending time with her family and friends.

   
Ricardo Saldarriaga joined CALMEC in 2007 as a legal assistant in our Medellin, Colombia office. He played an instrumental role in the development and establishment of our South American location. Ricardo is a graduate of the University of Medellin and received a Bachelors of Science degree in Law in 2007. He plans to pursue a Masters Degree in Procedure Law in the near future. Like many other members of the firm, Ricardo is bilingual. He is fluent in both Spanish and English.

   
Maria Berenice Uribe joined CALMEC in 2006 as a legal assistant. Before joining CALMEC, Berenice helped US residents in the Lake County area become US Citizens through the New Americans Initiative grant. Like many other members of the firm, Berenice is both bilingual and bicultural. She was born in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico and migrated to the US.
